Why We Pray

Prayer is our first response

From the moment we give our lives to Jesus we are invited into the beauty of communicating with God, the very creator of all things in heaven and on earth. We can come to him in boldness lifting up our every word, need, and desire. Whether we find ourselves in the valley or rejoicing on the mountain top, God sees it all. Prayer is not our last resort, but our first response. There is nothing too grand or too insignificant to God. If you're worried, pray. If you're weary, pray. If you're wondering, pray. If you're waiting, pray. Seasons of life may change, but God always remains the same.

Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear. — Isaiah 59:1

Why We Fast

Daniel 10:2-3

12 “Please test us for ten days on a diet of vegetables and water,” Daniel said.

Daniel was persistent and asked for a 10 day test of the diet. At the end of those 10 days, Daniel and his friends were physically and mentally superior compared to those who indulged in the King’s food. The guard allowed Daniel and his friends to eat whole plant foods for the duration of their training. At the end of their training the King found them 10 times better than all others in every matter of wisdom and understanding (Daniel 1:1-20).

Fasting is the act of choosing to abstain from food for a period of time. When we fast, we are practicing spiritual discipline by sacrificing one of our most essential daily routines. There is power in the absence of food as we hunger after the word and seek God with our mind, heart, body and spirit. There are several different ways that we can partner both prayer and fasting together. Some examples below…

Make prayer your first response and not your last resort.

The greatest movements of God are never done in a silo, but are started and sustained through the united prayer of God’s people. When we come together in prayer, it not only changes us but invites God to work with power to change our circumstances and communities.
